How does Online Staff Replacement stack up against, say, Excel-based Staff Replacement

The first thing to mention is that we do actually offer both, and have had both running in parallel within government.
- Having said that, our feedback from organisations is that in general, they feel comfortable talking about the Excel-based system, but feel that getting on board with something online seems like a step too big to take. And yet, the Excel-based system is networked, almost as if it were a website itself.
- The main message we are trying to get out there at the moment is that the opposite is true. Online systems no longer need to be the major implementations they used to be: an online shift grid is nowadays no less accessible than a spreadsheet, and in many ways, is more accessible.
- In fact, we suspect that rostering is moving closer to the idea of, say, a 'GoogleRoster' (this doesn't exist, but the word itself suggests 'lean'. And if it ever does come to exist, then it could and should make expensive mega-systems a thing of the past).
- By way of a parallel example, some areas of local government are already considering abandoning their email systems for gmail, an excellent email platform offered free by Google. This may seem unthinkable in your own organisation, but it's still worth looking into, weighing the benefits up against the negatives, which do exist.
- Our approach with online rostering has been to have this idea of 'GoogleRoster' in mind, and the ideas captured in the book The Google Story as well, and to try and do things differently, and simpler.
